Rigg Area
'Old Man's Neighbour'
LEALT (Gaelic: Half stream)
Up in the hills above Lealt are the remains of the old Diatomite mine that used to operate here. An open cast system, it involved dredging up the fine silt from the bottom of the loch. This powdery substance comprised the skeletal remains of billions of microscopic organisms and was used in the manufacture of many different products ranging from paint and cosmetics to toothpaste and insulation board.

RIGG (Norse: Ridge)
There were once many small settlements along the coast between here and Portree. They disappeared when the families were evicted to make way for sheep.
