In 1919 a group of crofters and their families, having been evicted from the neighbouring island of Rona, landed here and attempted to take land on which to live. They were arrested and taken to trial but public support for them was so strong that they were freed and allowed to return to live on Raasay. They became known as the 'Rona Raiders' and their cottages, now restored, can still be seen near here.
